After all was said and done, the First MIO Grand Reunion was a success. I cannot say anything more accolades to the Organizers. We had our first Manyjer meeting last weekend and a warm-up dance. We also had a chance to discuss expected proceeds from the reunion. The feedback was that, the funds generated from the reunion will be donated to the flood victims/reparations in our town. This was unanimously agreed upon. We raised an ample sum of money. Donations from the Baltazar family was a big plu…

From all the corners of the world and from all walks of life like drones, they converged to this hotel/casino by the Flamingo Boulevard in Vegas called Gold Coast. The name appeared misleading since there were no gold bars but just glitters from the electric bulbs and is nowhere nearby any coast in this once-upon-a-time desert land. By 11:00 AM of October 23, the typical bells and tones of the winning slot machines were muffled by the high sounding decibels of a foreign tongue - amay anaw-awet y…

i do remember some of these things....finally realized .....nabuhay pala ako sa kapayapaan...
NAAALALA KO PA!
Si Nanay ay nasa bahay pag-uwi namin galing sa paaralan;
Walang mga bakod at gate ang magkakapit-bahay, kung meron, gumamela lang;
piso lang ang baon: singkwenta sentemo sa umaga, singkwenta sentemo sa hapon;
Merong free ang mga patpat ng ice drop: buko man o munggo.
Mataas ang paggalang sa mga guro at ang tawag sa kanila ay Maestro/a:
Di binibili ang tubig, pwedeng maki-inom sa di mo…

It’s Sunday February 22, 2009 at 8:45 PM in Dagupan; it’s 2:45 AM in Hawaii. At this very moment, the MNHS59ers are in the Star Plaza Hotel for the Gala Dinner and Ball celebrating the 2nd day of the MNHS Class of 1959 Golden Anniversary and Reunion. I regret that I can not be with the MNHS59ers, however, I’m so happy to talk on the phone to each and everyone who are at the Star Plaza Hotel. To name a few, Zenaida de Guzman-Chico, Norma Banez-Cabrasawan, Carmelita Vergara-Tan, Virginia Tandoc, N…

In Galen’s cloak
Youth is….life as yet untouched by tragedy
I came into this world not within the comfort of hospital confines. There were no nurses who attended to my mother, no obstetrician in sight, no sterile gowns and no gloves to hold my slimy body. As I slithered out of the womb on a dimly kerosene-lit lamp room of our house in the barrio, two expectant hands from an elderly midwife awaited my arrival one early morning in July of 1952.
In the crevices of my mind, there are still neuron…

Life in this Little Village, Part 3
Gueguesangen Elementary School is where the Lomibao children had their early education. It is located in the center of the barrio, about 4 ½ kms south of Poblacion. The school flooring is elevated by about three feet and for a long time it did not occur to me why it was so until one typhoon inundated the entire school compound by probably up to around a foot deep. On most occasions, the flood barely submerged the grassy lawn up to the ankle.
I entered first…

A.“OPLAN TSINELAS”
The very supportive couple Bona De Vera-Parayno and Melchor (Choy ) Parayno spent the 2008 Christmas season with their perpetual mission of sharing their continuous blessing to our dear kabaleyans in Mangaldan. Two major projects were successfully implemented, the “OPLAN TSINELAS” and “UNIFORM T-SHIRTS for the INDEPAKETs” (drivers of the tricycle ya indepak), which is the most popular means of transport jad baley tayo (smoke and pollution free transport). Mind you, there are…

Life In This Little Village, Part 2
(Late 50’s and early 60’s)
There were no televisions then. So therefore, you can imagine how enthused the folks were whenever a touring van promoting Vicks Vaporub or Cortal or the deworming agent “Padrax“, trek to the barrio excitedly announcing via a squeaky-sounding loud speaker “walay cine naani no labi” ( there will be a free movie tonight). The sales pitch was to gather the folks early in the evening and show a double-featured Western action-packed cowb…

Life In This Little Village
(Recollections of my husband who lived in Gueguesangen)
I grew up in a small village with not much to look forward to. My family may be one of the few with means to afford a better meal on a day-to-day living. My dad graduated in college as a teacher but knowing that he cannot sustain a growing family, he had to resort to some other means of business. I do not remember when he started raising chickens and pigs to call it a "poultry and piggery farm" but I saw two ap…
